below 8% for the first time since january 2009. it's good news for president obama, after his underwhelming performance in wednesday' debate. and bad news for mitt romney, and his conspiracy-minded supporters on the republican right. more on that in a moment. according to the bureau of labor statistics, unemployment dropped to 7.8% last month down .3 of a percent since august. employers added 114,000 new jobs. including 104 in the private sector and 10,000 in the public sector which had seen months of steady decline. in july's number revised to 181,000 with an additional 40,000 new jobs. president obama shared the news with a cheering crowd at a campaign appearance in fairfax virginia. >> obama: this morning we found out that the unemployment rate had fallen to its lowest level since i office. but today's news certainly is not an excuse to try to talk down the economy to score a few political points. it's a reminder that this country has come too far to turn back now. >> eliot: not if you're mitt romney. the g.o.p. contender talked down the jobs numbers and the economy at an a

election day. there's big news on fundraising and this hour. president obama and the democrats raised $181 million in september. that is the highest election monthly total so far. meanwhile the romney camp claims it has collected more than $12 million in online donations and seeing bigger crowds on the campaign trail since wednesday's debate. but these numbers are still seizing the headlines according to conspiracy theories. jobless rate down to 7.8%, the lowest since the president took office. total employment increased 872,000. that's the biggest jump in the monthly number since june 1983. both candidates weighed in on the numbers. let's take a listen. >> we have learned that the unemployment rate is now at its lowest level since i took office. more americans are entering the work force. more americans are getting jobs. but too many of our friends and neighbors are still looking for work or struggling to pay the bills. many of them since long before this crisis hit. we owe it to them to keep moving forward. we've come too far to turn back now. >> do you realize that the number of people

with his wife susie. so do you really believe that people in the obama campaign, the chicago guy that you tweeted about, that they cooked the numbers? >> anderson, last night before these numbers came out, i tweeted, i wonder what the assumptions will be tomorrow. because last month, the assumptions were that participation rate dropped to the lowest level since jimmy connor. that means people quit looking for work so they don't count. there are so many assumptions that one makes coming into these numbers. you pointed out very accurately that they polled 60,000 people out of a work force of 100 million plus to see how many people had work coming in and out. but the numbers that came out today, they were the highest numbers of household employment since june of 1983, the biggest year of the reagan recovery. the plausibility, it just doesn't seem right. maybe the numbers were wrong before, maybe they're wrong now; i don't know. but i'm involved in this economy in a very deep way right now in lots of businesses, and this econy is not growing, i guarantee you, at 5%. >> they say a number of th
